MISS MELVIS AND THE BUFORD PUSSER EXPERIENCE
SELF TITLED // 2009, Self-Release
Although not the greatest musicians, they do use the simple aesthetics of garage rock to express themselves, and they accomplish this admirably. I imagine young “riot grrrls” with multi-colored hair laughing and breaking bottles over someone’s car…then speeding off in some rusted out 86’ tomato-colored Toyota Corolla; this would be the soundtrack to their impending journey. It’s a simple record meant to be listened to at night at high volume on a long trip. The song, “Black Nanny,” sounds like late 80’s, early 90’s stoner rock…think early Sonic Youth and Dick Dale being punched in the face by the Dead Kennedys and Bikini Kill. “Caretaker” is a surf-dance song conjuring up the spirits of the Mountain Goats and an old (now-defunct) Cleveland band – Big Barn. I’ve seen Miss Melvis live before, and she’s a Rock Star…whether playing at Pat’s in the Flats here in Cleveland, or opening up at the Reading Festival. But not a hint of pretension can be tracked down on this freshman release. This is bad-ass chick garage rock.
